Baosteel Co., Ltd. (600019), a listed company under China Baowu, a state-owned steel enterprise, revealed that the company's corrosion resistant steel rail U68CuCr for high-speed railways has recently achieved its global debut. This product achieves a good balance between the mechanical performance, welding performance, and corrosion resistance of steel rails, solving one of the key challenges that restrict the development of domestic railways. It has been successfully applied in the world's first high-speed railway submarine tunnel with a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour.
It is reported that Baosteel's corrosion-resistant steel rail U68CuCr has the characteristics of high strength and good wear resistance. The periodic immersion corrosion test conducted by the China Academy of Railway Sciences, the comparison test of atmospheric exposure in various environments, and the analysis of actual line applications show that its corrosion resistance performance is improved by 30% -50% compared to traditional U75V rails. The development process of this product can be traced back to 4 years ago. In 2016, China National Railway Group proposed a demand for corrosion-resistant steel rails based on the corrosion problem of steel rails on the Guangzhou Shenzhen Hong Kong high-speed railway. The Baosteel Rail Steel Project Team immediately conducted research on the corrosion of steel rails in the Shiziyang Tunnel of the Guangzhou Shenzhen Hong Kong high-speed railway. Finally, in 2019, the project team broke through the bottleneck, solved core technical problems, achieved industrial trial production of steel rails, and passed the technical review of China National Railway Group. All performance indicators met the requirements of the high-grade railway standard "Steel rails for high-speed railways" (TB/T 3276-2011). At the same time, with the permission of China National Railway Group, a trial laying of 5 kilometers each of the left and right tracks was successfully carried out on the Shiziyang Subsea Tunnel of the Guangzhou Shenzhen Hong Kong high-speed railway in November 2019. The Shiziyang Tunnel of the Guangzhou Shenzhen Hong Kong high-speed railway was the first underwater shield tunnel in China, and it was also a long-distance and high construction standard underwater railway tunnel at that time. The hydrogeological environment was extremely complex, and the corrosion resistance performance of the steel rails was extremely high. The total length of the tunnel was about 10.8 kilometers, and it was a double track tunnel. U68CuCr corrosion resistant rails were laid on the seabed section, with 5 kilometers on each side. The performance indicators of the steel rails were extremely strict. Baosteel Group stated that the trial laying of U68CuCr corrosion-resistant rails is the first time in China that high-speed rail replacement construction has been carried out in ultra long and super large tunnels. The project is large-scale and difficult to construct, with hundreds of workers and only 2 rails can be replaced per night, requiring a total of 20 rails to be replaced. At the same time, for the first time, the application of new steel rail products in passenger high-speed railways has been achieved, filling the international gap in the application of corrosion-resistant steel rail products in passenger high-speed railways.
